Minister Koolmees has announced to the Second Chamber a revision of the current system for integration of refugees for mid-2020. Under the new policy, the municipalities will be given control over integration from the moment that a refugee has a status and has been assigned accommodation in a particular municipality. This new system creates scope for customisation, while aiming for a uniform approach in the various municipalities. 

The municipalities will be put back in charge, so that newcomers no longer have to organise their own integration. The loan system will be abolished and control of this will also be placed in the hands of the municipalities. This will prevent abuses and fraud among language providers as far as possible. As Minister Koolmees points out in this video, it is important that status holders start work as soon as possible, by means of a work placement, for example. Once they are at work, they will also learn the language faster.

The Inburgeren Werkt project ties in with the new policy of Minister Koolmees. To allow status holders to integrate better and faster, they can complete a work placement for 9 months, for between 8 and 24 hours a week, at a company of their choice while still receiving benefits. Depending on the personal Plan for Integration and Participation (PIP), the client manager can decide to deviate from the number of hours per week and the duration of the period. During this period, status holders can practise their Dutch and develop competences and skills that are important in the labour market.
